چکیده

Articular cartilage does not contain blood vessels, the nutrition of chrondrocytes being derived mainly by diffusion of synovial fluid (Stockwell and Barnett, 1964; Ekholm, 1951). It has been demonstrated that the permeability of articular cartilage diminishes with ageing (Stockwell and Barnett, 1964; Tsaltsas and Kyriazis, 1967). This change has been attributed not only to the physical changes brought about by the passage of time, but also to modifications of the chemical constituents of the matrix (Kaplan and Meyer, 1959). Verzar (1963), using mechanical and chemical means, suggested that one of the principal changes associated with ageing is the increase in cross-linking of collagen fibres. He interprets this to mean that there is an increase in the degree of maturation of this protein. Experimental lathyrism, on the other hand, is characterized by a lack in the degree of maturation of collagen. This has been demonstrated by an increase in lathyritic tissues of immature neutral salt-soluble collagen (Levene and Gross, 1959; Gross and Levene, 1959). On the basis of these observations, it has been suggested that experimental lathyrism is the apparent antithesis of ageing in connective tissue (Bickley, 1964). The purpose of this study was to test this hypothesis, that lathyrism is indeed the antithesis of ageing, and to determine what implications a change in cartilage permeability in experimental lathyrism might have on the pathogenesis of this disease.

Experimental Study on Protective Role of NSAID on Articular Cartilage Destruction in Septic Arthritis

Background: Surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy are the cornerstones of treatment protocols in septic arthritis; however, in some circumstances, the diagnosis and initiation of treatment may be retarded by slow disease progression or the time when the patient’s condition precludes early surgery. Therefore, it is beneficial to find ways to reduce the amount of articular injury. This study a...

Effect of Intraarticular Ketamine Administration on the Histopathological Changes of Knee Joint in the Rat Model

Objective- Postoperative pain management in patients that undergone arthroscopy is one of the most important procedures for their rehabilitation. Analgesic injection intra-articularly can facilitate pain control in such patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ketamine on articular cartilage in rat model. Design- Experimental study. Animals- Twenty Wistar Rats Procedure...

Introduction The aim of the research was to investigate the effect of 8 weeks’ exercise training and ozone therapy on articular cartilage tissue mRNA Beclin-1, AMPK, and mTOR gene expression in rat’s model of osteoarthritis (OA). Materials and Methods In this experimental study, 40 adult male rats 210±10 gr were randomly divided into 5 groups: 1) control (CN), 2) OA, 3) OA + ozone, 4) OA + ex...

The Effect of Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Aqueous Extract of Elaeagnus Angustifolia on the Mechanical Properties of Articular Cartilage in an Experimental Model of Rat Osteoarthritis

Introduction: Although, the effect of direct intra-articular injection of bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) on the repair of articular cartilage and the effect of Elaeagnus angustifolia extract on pain relief in patients with osteoarthritis have been investigated, no studies has been conducted to compare the effects of these two therapeutic methods on the mechanical properties of articular cartila...

Using Xenogenic (Calf Foetal) Osteochondral Transplantation for Articular Cartilage Defect in Rabbit Model

Background: The destruction of articular cartilage is the major cause of articular problems. The articular cartilage has little repair postertial due to lack of perichondrium and direct blood circulation. It is, therefore important to consider this phenomena in surgical treatments. One of the articular cartilage reconstructive surgeries is using Osteo-Chondral graft. The main purpose of this re...
